Zanzibar – it’s every bit as exotic as the name implies. Think powder-white islands ringed by a turquoise sea, wooden dhows bobbing at their moorings and palm trees swaying in the sultry breeze. Our pre-conference tour is the holiday add-on your weary soul needs ahead of our epic adventures on mainland Tanzania. Explore the historic Swahili trading hub of Stone Town, meet the Colobus monkeys of Jozani Forest and claim a patch of sand all to yourself on a day sail through the Zanzibar archipelago.

Join us on this magical trip to the legendary island of Zanzibar and, as they say in Swahili, “HAKUNA MATATA” (no worries).

Day 1

Zanzibar

Arrive in Zanzibar in the morning. Don’t be seduced by those dazzling turquoise beaches just yet, we have a town to explore. Discover the cultural riches of Stone Town during a three-hour tour that delves into the history of this Swahili trading hub. Starting at the lively city market, bursting with tropical fruits, vegetables, fish and spices, the tour wends through the town’s narrow alleys, past centuries-old lime-washed coralline ragstone buildings and wood-carved doors. Visit the 17th century Anglican church where slaves used to be auctioned, see the House of Wonders royal palace and wander through the crumbling Old Fort. Along the way, learn how the architecture of this World Heritage-listed town is a melting pot of Swahili, Indian, Arab and European building traditions.

Check in to the Dream of Zanzibar Hotel, set among swaying palm trees right on the beach.

Day 2

Zanzibar Resort

Today is your chance to sink your toes into that sublime sand and indulge in some well-earned R&R. The day is yours to enjoy as you please. Lounge by one of the resort’s two inviting swimming pools, go exploring on a kayak or live it up like a Sultan of Zanzibar in the day spa.

If you want to venture further afield, join a spice tour and cooking class, visit Prison Island or go snorkelling at Mnemba Atoll.

Day 3

Zanzibar Resort

Don your hat and sunscreen, today we are exploring Jozani Forest, the largest tract of indigenous forest on the island of Zanzibar. There’ll be a welcome party when we arrive – a troop of red colobus monkeys, hundreds of them. Endemic to the island, the monkeys are distinguished by the riot of red fur on their backs and spikey grey tresses atop their heads. Stroll through the shaded forest of ferns and mangroves, see the endangered primates swinging from the branches and learn about successful efforts to conserve the species. Keep your eyes peeled for pint-sized suni antelopes, bush pigs, chameleons and birds.

Day 4

Stone Town

Set sail like the early traders of Zanzibar in a traditional hand-carved wooden dhow as we enjoy a full-day exploring the Minai Bay Conservation area. Spy dolphins frolicking in the water, swim from pristine islets, snorkel coral reefs and join the crew on a ngalawa – an outrigger canoe carved from a single mangrove tree. If the tide is high, we’ll explore a hidden lagoon tucked inside Kwale island. Enjoy a delicious seafood barbecue lunch before returning to the main island and checking in to Zanzibar Serena Hotel.

Day 5

Zanzibar - Arusha

Transfer to the airport and fly to Arusha to join the main conference.
