Ship & Cabins.

The Akademik Sergey Vavilov is modern, comfortable, safe and ice strengthened. From small group sessions to briefings for all passengers, we have public spaces onboard the ship ideally suited for each and every need.

A separate lounge and bar with panoramic views, as well as a library provide ideal places to sit and relax or catch up on some reading. A selection of movies and documentaries can also be watched in the lounge.

The sumptuous meals prepared for you by our culinary team are enjoyed in our dining room, which can host all passengers in a single seating and will keep you feeling healthy and strong for the myriad of activities offered throughout the voyage.

Other facilities include the theatre style presentation room, gift-shop, fitness room, massage room, hot water spa, sauna and plunge pool. There’s also a dedicated expedition ‘mud-room’ where you prepare for your off-ship excursions.

Activities.

Zodiac Tours
Each day on the Antarctic Peninsula every passenger has the opportunity to go on a zodiac tour or shore landing twice a day (weather permitting). Because of a strict limit of numbers allowed, larger cruise ships are unable to provide this for all passengers.

Wildlife

You will get the opportunity to see a huge variety of wildlife, up close and personal. The wildlife experts onboard will answer all your questions so that you get the most out of the experience.

Photography
Antarctica is a unique place for photography. Whether you are semi-professional, or shooting with your iPad, you will be able to take amazing photos every day, with advice from onboard experts.

Walks and Hikes
Some locations offer the opportunity to go on short or long walks, depending on your fitness level and preference.

Kayaking
Some people may wish to choose the optional kayaking package. This will give you the chance to kayak through the sea ice and around icebergs. This unique opportunity is limited to 12 people, so if this is a draw card you need to book now.

Camping
For the adventurous, you have the very rare chance to camp in Antarctica. Don’t miss out!! Not many people can say they have done this.

Academic Program.

ANTARCTICA MEDICAL CONFERENCE PROGRAM

Antarctica is the most magnificent wilderness in the world.

The remoteness of the region has informed the topics for the academic program:

Adventure medicine

As we and many of our patients undertake more active and challenging travels in more out of the way places it is important for doctors to properly assess and advise them. This series of presentations and practical exercises will provide education about high altitude medicine, extreme climate travel, diving medicals and preparation for wilderness and remote trekking.

Musculoskeletal Medicine

Sporting and exercise-related injuries and musculoskeletal problems are very common, making up 18% of GP consultation 2013-2014 (BEACH study).  The talks will include hands-on teaching of joint examination, joint taping and presentations covering investigation and clinical diagnosis of back pain, musculoskeletal chest pain, knee and hip/groin pain.

Cardiology

The topics that will be covered in this series of talks are as relevant to ourselvesas much as to our patients. Based on latest evidence you will learn about the most appropriate cardiac investigations and interventions as we struggle with an ever-increasing range of choices. Learn about the newest in heart failure management and the real world management of AF and other arrhythmias.
