Day 1
Depart Australia at night connect through Dubai connect to the flight to Stockholm.
Enjoy a brief visit to Stockholm, often called the Venice of Scandinavia, as it is built upon 14 islands. During winter, the air is crisp and clean, the waterways covered in ice, the rooftops covered in a blanket of snow and the trees glittering with ice – a fairytale wonderland.
Day 2
Arrive in Stockholm around midday. You will be taken to your hotel, a city icon since 1874. Enjoy the waterfront location, in the very centre of the Old Town.
The rest of the day is free for you to rest or explore on your own. Please ask our helpful staff about things to do.
Day 3
On today’s tour, pass through the cobbled streets of the medieval old town, past the grand Royal Palace watched over by the Royal Guards, pass the art-nouveau Royal Dramatic Theatre and along the posh waterfront boulevard Strandvagen, gazing at the opulent homes of the rich and famous. Visit the Vasa museum and see the world’s oldest fully preserved ship, dating from 1682. Admire her intricately carved statues and treasures.
After lunch, stroll the narrow streets of the old town, Gamla Stan, soaking up the bohemian atmosphere and discovering interesting doorways, frescoes and nooks and crannies. The buildings, in so many shades of gold, will make you feel like you are in a fairytale picturebook. See Stortoget, Great Square, dominated by the old Stock Exchange, now housing the Nobel Museum and Swedish academy. Take a guided tour of the splendid Royal Palace, perhaps catching the changing of the guard ceremony in the courtyard.
Evening free to dine in one of the city’s trendy restaurants.
Day 4
This morning visit the Nobel Museum to learn about Alfred Nobel the idealist, inventor, entrepreneur, and cosmopolitan, and the international perspective that distinguished his life andlegacy. Examine the creative works of more than thirty Laureates as well as a number of milieus that inspired creativity, in the film room and artefact theatre. Understand the background of historic events behind a number of well-known as well as controversial Nobel Prizes. You may wish to try the unique Nobel ice-cream, made exclusively for the Museum café, which was served at the Nobel Prize banquets from 1976-1998.
The next stop is at City Hall where the annual Nobel Prize festivities take place. Feel the vibe in the grand Blue Hall and the Golden Hall decorated with 18 million pieces of gold mosaic depicting scenes from Stockholm’s history.
Return to the hotel. The rest of your afternoon and evening are free. Please ask our helpful staff for information about things to do.
Day 5
Transfer to the airport for your flight to Kiruna to join the main conference tour.
