For the fit and enthusiastic, spend a few extra days based in Paro doing daily hikes to some more out of the way places, soaking up the spectacular scenery, watching local life and enjoying the serenity of this beautiful part of the world.

Day 1

Approximately 3 hours hiking

Drive to the top of Chele -la Pass and then hike through a superb pine and rhododendron forest to reach Kila Gompa Nunnery. Visit the nunnery where the women spend their days in religious study, prayer and meditation (great work if you can get it).

Day 2

Approximately 5 hours hiking

Hike to Jele Dzong, a medieval fortress where travellers could rest overnight as they traversed the country. Your walk takes you on a gradual uphill climb through a mixed conifer forest where you might glimpse white langurs, Himalayan musk deer and monal pheasants.

Day 3

Approximately 5 hours hiking

Today hike from Thimphu to Phajoding. Climb up through a pine forest passing numerous meditation spots along the way, some clinging precariously to the rocky cliffs. Arrive at Phajoding monastery where you will meet the monks. There are spectacular views to the snow-capped Himalayas from your eyrie.

Day 4

Depart this afternoon, overnight at the Novotel, Bangkok Airport

Day 5

Depart Bangkok in the late afternoon, arriving in Australia in the morning of Saturday 2 December 2017.
