EAST AFRICA MEDICAL CONFERENCE PROGRAM
A number of health issues prevalent in East Africa have informed the topics for this conference.
Infectious Diseases
With more people, including ourselves, visiting exotic locations around the world doctors must be able to give appropriate pre-travel health advice and recognise infectious diseases in returned travellers. Antibiotic resistance and appropriate use of antimicrobial agents is becoming a world-wide problem which will be covered during the lecture program.
Ophthalmology
Kenya and Australia share some common causes of blindness and visual impairment – cataract, macular degeneration, corneal disease. These will be discussed during this part of the program. Other topics will include inflammatory eye disease and ocular manifestation of systemic disease.
ENT/Head and neck
Our series of talks will cover common conditions such as otitis media (purulent OM is very common in Kenya) and externa as well as current management of sinusitis. Diagnosis, investigation and management of head and neck lumps will also be covered in this topic.
Volunteer clinic in Masai village
As with previous conferences we have held in East Africa, we will be doing a half day clinic for a local village in conjunction with their staff. Many of the conditions we see are common GP presentations we are used to in Australia but there are others that are more particular to Africa. This clinic and our donations of medication and equipment is always much appreciated by the locals and is a terrific experience for our delegates.

Our conference programs are prepared over a 12 month period and full details are available 3 months prior to the conference. Unconventional Conventions is an accredited education provider for RACGP. Application for ACRRM points is made for each conference. Dental programs are certifiable with Dental Board of Australia. Specialists may apply for CPD points at their own discretion.
